It's not a "left" or "right" issue. Only an ignorant fool would think so. I hope that isn't what you are.
There are stupid people in all occupations, all sexes, all colors, all political leanings. Prove me wrong and win a cookie. Some folks just aren't capable of forward thinking, rational thought no matter what education they have or how book smart they are. It's just a fact.
If you read the whole article, the assignment wasn't totally out of line. I get where he or she was trying to go but it was ill thought out. The teacher could have made a better case had the letter been written after the class finished Night and if a selection of two or three other prompt options, related to the subject, were available for the students to chose from. This is another case where the issue isn't really the assignment but the delivery, all because the instructor failed to think about and plan for what should be understandable student reluctance to do the assignment.
The teacher is now "on leave", the entire district will undergo "sensitivity training" by the Anti-Defamation league and the campus will be visited by the Common Sense Coalition. And the Superintendent apologized.
Pretty quick action done if you ask me.
I guess telling kids to put your all into writing why "Jews are evil" really hit a nerve.
I answered this in the education forum. I think it was a good assignment. Any kid who did some research on this would be disgusted by the German people going along to get along and following their government's lead. It shows how people "on a dime" can change to despicable excuses for human beings quite easily and since it was an English class, immediately after the assignment I would assign them to read "Lord of The Flies" and show them the video "Night and Fog."
I might, however, give their parents a "heads up" on what I was trying to accomplish.
