How come the USA is not part of the Commonwealth? I have always wondered this.
Canada and Australia became independent later then us yet they are still part of the Commonwealth.

Not saying it is better, but there must be a reason for it?

I heard rumor it had to do with some sort of scuffle or disagreement in the late 1700s.

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.....

Because "Commonwealth" sounds like some sort of commie wealth redistribution scheme.

I've seen this before somewhere.


There was also an issue about assembling in groups. And something about the price of stamps or some such.

The Commonwealth didn't come into existence until a long, long time after the US became independent.

You should tell the Commonwealth of Virginia that, they still think they are a part of the Commonwealth.
