Many people don't take geography that seriously which sucks because it's my favorite subject and the only one I'm good at.
I've known for years, since 2000, that Chechnya was an Autonomous Region in Russia. I've know about Dagestan, Ingushetia, and North Ossetia as well.
Geography was my favorite subject in school, so for me, I loved reading maps and reading about different places. However, alot of students I went to high school with never took it serious. As to why geography isn't taken seriously, I think alot of it has to do with perception. From what I gather, some people thin geography is merely memorizing state capitals. It goes beyond that. It's quite broad of a subject. However, many people just view is as something useless.
This isn't surprise. Last time I checked, someone mistaken Argentina with Colombia and goofed with the map.
Oh god no, now you've made the cartels mad.
