Good for this guy. He won a lawsuit against some anti-gay religious wackos who defiled his dead son's funeral.
A federal jury on Wednesday awarded the father of a fallen Marine $2.9 million in compensatory damages after finding an anti-gay Kansas church and three of its leaders liable for invasion of privacy and intent to inflict emotional distress for picketing the Marine's funeral in 2006.
Albert Snyder of York, Pa., sued the Westboro Baptist Church for unspecified monetary damages after members staged a demonstration at the March 2006 funeral of his son, Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder, who was killed in Iraq.
Church members routinely picket funerals of military personnel killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, carrying signs such as "Thank God for dead soldiers" and "God hates ****."
He is a fallen marine the ultimate sacrifice. May he rest in peace and may his father spend this money wisely. More to the point may this church find poverty humbling.
For once a jury used a little sense.
Does anybody know what the implied connection is here in the first place between "Thank God for dead soldiers" and "God hates ****"? I thought the military was letting in just about anybody with a pulse other than gays these days. Confused.

as a christian, i'm happy this ruling got passed down. This shameless church group has misrepresented christians, caused already grieving families more pain, and disgraced the memories of soldiers who made the surpreme sacrifice to honor their country.

Agreed. A funeral is no time to be 'protesting'. Absolutely no respect for the dead, and as someone stated earlier: perhaps poverty will be humbling indeed
I can no longer find the depths of absolute horror to comment on Fred Phelps, his church and/or his work. Hopefully this fine will be only a miniscule down payment on his debt to society.
May the family of Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder, PBUH, find comfort in his short life.
