I'm aware of his beliefs and rhetoric, but what why is he considered influential by some?

He didn't really get any real social change done.

Dr. King and his movement got us voting rights and desegregation.....

Malcolm is not in this photo

Voting Rights Bill.......

Malcolm's fiery rhetoric stirred a lot of anger and it scared a lot of white folks. You don't get much done when you are calling the other folks "Devils" and such. King preached love and tolerance.....his way was harder . But it proved effective.

Malcolm was one of the greatest Americans ever. His whole philosophy was about being self-sufficient, responsible, and not dependent on anyone else (especially the government). You could almost call him a libertarian.

Plus, he absolutely HATED white liberals:

His book is probably the greatest and most influential biography that I have ever read.

His contribution is in the constellation of ideas...much like Socrates, Plato, Aristotle etc

He should have spent more time being concerned about black muslims.

I think Malcolm X is influential much in the way Marcus Garvey was influential. He got some people, in particular some Black people to think in a different way. In that regard he was influential. Personally I'm more closer to aspects of his ideology than MLK's. MLK's ideology is rooted in liberal idealism whereas Malcom's ideology was rooted in reality.

How is this true when MLK's idea became law and is what we live by today? Segregation is outlawed and race relations have improved immensely.

MLK's non-violent revolution would have never been successful without Malcolm's threat of throwing off tyranny by any means necessary. The powers that be decided that maybe they should deal with King instead of the alternative.
