Mitochondrial DNA is exclusively and uniformly inherited from the mother. It is therefore not possible that "Only people from the Indian subcontinent have been found to carry the particular strand of DNA."
It must also have been shared by his brother (2), his mother (3), all her siblings (7), all his first cousins via his Spencer aunts (13) their mother (14), all her siblings (16) ... I could go on but you get the point. Going back no more than three generations in the UK identifies more people with this particular strand of mtDNA than have apparently been found in all of the Indian subcontinent.
In other words, at this point, the evidence would actually suggest that they've discovered 14 Indians with European DNA, not one English royal with Indian DNA.
Now... I'm not saying that's how the conclusion will eventually pan out, just that the evidence to support this apparently offensive to some people conclusion is rather thin.
This is pretty much old news. It's been known for many years that Princess Diana's mother had an "Armenian" ancestor on her maternal ancestral line.
