I just saw this line from Wikipedia while reading about the MiG 35. "In April 2014, it was reported that Egypt plans to order 24 MiG-35 fighters as part of a US$3 billion arms deal."Mikoyan MiG-35 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Why are we sending money to Egypt to buy Russian fighters? Someone explain this one to me.
Then I looked at the cost of an F-22. $400,000,000 per aircraft, just to build it. For a comparison, the Russian Su 35 costs $40,000,000 per craft. It's just mindblowing. For the F-35 program, they were looking at about $ 1.5 trillion to fund the program, research, building, maintenance of the whole deal. I guess their trying to cut that down to $1 trillion, but the Economist magazine said the whole F-35 program might be on a death spiral where decreased orders would lead to increased per unit costs, leading to decreased orders.
Why do they spend this amount of money on just one aspect of the military, fighter jets?
The US has been sending aid and weapons to Egypt since the 1979 peace accord - a bribe to keep them on our side and to not threaten Israel. With the recent coup in Egypt the US has threatened to suspend or reduce aid - that's what the right wants isn't it?

The promise of the F-35 is that it will be untouchable - mainly due to stealth and onboard 'smart' systems being able to track and dispatch enemy planes (from any orientation) before they can detect the F-35. The next step is pilotless 'drone' fighters. The F-35 could be the last generation piloted fighter.
one reason the US sends money to some countries so that they can buy weapons systems on hte open market is so that we can get our hands on that technology without having to steal it. then we can take the technology apart and see what the russians and chinese, and other weapons systems manufacturers are doing, and either copy it, or figure a way to defeat it.
It’s not clear exactly how much of the military aid — which has held steady at about $1.3 billion since 1987 — will be cut off.
The U.S. is unlikely to cut off aid that funds counterterrorism operations or security in the Sinai Peninsula and along Egypt’s border with Israel and the Gaza Strip,
"President Mubarak and military leaders view our military assistance program as the cornerstone of our mil-mil relationship and consider the USD 1.3 billion in annual FMF as "untouchable compensation" for making and maintaining peace with Israel. The tangible benefits to our mil-mil relationship are clear: Egypt remains at peace with Israel, and the U.S. military enjoys priority access to the Suez Canal and Egyptian airspace.
The F-35 program is the crowning glory of our corporate welfare system. Funding Egypt's alleged purchasing of Russian fighters is just a way to cut the costs of bribing Egypt to leave the Zionists alone. We cannot afford government welfare at F-35 level because we need to use the money for domestic infrastructure and we have no obligation to the Zionist fanatics or the State of Israel.

The short answer is that money is payment for keeping open the Suez Canal.
