ORLANDO, Fla. -- An 18-year-old was arrested on University of Central Florida property with an AK-47 assault rifle and ammunition that can penetrate bullet-proof vests.

Police said Jonathan Taylor, 18, was recently spotted at the Pegasus Pointe apartments, which is considered UCF property, and arrested on suspicion of trespassing.

When officers searched his vehicle, they found the AK-47 with 54 rounds of ammunition and another hand gun.

I believe in gun ownership. I do not believe that any citizen needs an AK-47. I would worry about anyone that thinks they need or wants a gun like that.

Alarmist!

He was at an apartment with a weapon in his car. Big Flippin Deal! He has a rifle in a caliber that would likely penetrate a bullet proof vest - most large game hunting rounds would. He had a handgun (Oh Gosh golly!).

In college my friends and I liked to shoot at the range. One of them had a soviet era semi-auto military style rifle. He would pick us up at the fraternity house (considered campus) with the weapon in his car - probably a technical violation of the rules. And get this...

Nobody died!

When people say M16 or AK47 they think machine gun, it's a common fallacy.

AK's and M16's are issued in civilian semi-automatic versions. No more lethal and has no more rapid fire capibility than your average 9MM handgun, perhaps safer because they are harder to conceal.

I've heard of people converting them to auto fire. It's not easy and requires some specialized machining skills. It's also very illegal.

edit note - My Gosh, do we suddenly have a mod that is not for once an extreme ultra-liberal? All the mods I've seen make Nancy Pelosi look like a follower of Rush Limbaugh.

Default with all due respect...

With all due respect to a senior member, a 9mm round is far less lethal than the .223, let alone the 7.62x39. It's rare to find a 9 load that will produce more than 400 ft/lbs of energy; The 7.62 can produce well over 1,000. Additionally, lets not forget the additional range and penetrating power of the rifle rounds.

Nevertheless, I disagree with any legislation or police action that attempts to "prevent gun violence" or "save lives" by denying us our 2nd amendment rights. Let us not forget the words "...the right of the people...," not the right of the army or people in the militia, but of you and me. After all, do the cops, soldiers and feds keep their heat in locked boxes in their homes with the ammo separate? The framers of the constitution would be furious with us for giving up our rights and relying on a large, centralized government for protection.

Well said. If the (Man) in question was up to no good then he will get his reward and the police should be congradulated. If it was simply a case of an hoonest man looking for his friends to go out to the range then no real harm done. Police did their jobs....
This civic rage about what guns are valid and which are not amazes me. Since when is the USA a country dictated soley based on needs? If that were the case the cars we own would be legeslated. Single adult: 2 seat 4 cylinder car. couple no children 2 seat 4 cyl. car.
Pick ups can only be owned by construction workers and farmers.
luxury cars only owned by diplomats or ceo's.
Needs v.s wants should not be the deciding factor in legeslation.

Another reason for regulation which the NRA vehemently opposes in any way, shape, or form. Say good bye to gun locks?

What was he trying to do? Overthrow the government?

This story is short with not much detailed info. While he may have been tresspassing there is no mention to his intent. For all we know he may have been going or coming from the range, with no intention of hurting anybody.

Yet because of what they found, the report sways toward assuming something. He may have been arrested but it might have been only for tresspassing. And without a photo of the rifle they found,I'll hold back on judgement because the press has been known to misreport any firearm into being a assault type rifle. The SKS looks similar to a AK,yet only holds 10 rounds and I have seen the media on a couple of occassions show a photo of a SKS yet call it a AK.

Go to any public rifle range and you'll probably see at least on AK being used and those people have never misused it or hurt anybody. So for those who question why use a AK or any other type as a matter, just remember that the media has made the AK a sensationalism weapon because of it being used a couple times in crime and they might be misreporting facts.

The AK is made in two varients. One is a perfectly legal Semi-Auto. The other is fully selectable for the rate of fire.

Same with the M-16. It is selectable in it's rate of fire. The civilian version, although it looks exactly like it, is called an AR-15.

So the gun in question could very well be a AK-47 of the legal, Semi-Auto version.

But the media won't look that close, they'll just do like Fienstein and say, "It looks like one so there for it is."
