That was the message from a cohort of elected officials at a Monday press conference in downtown Chicago that called for the legalization of recreational marijuana in Illinois.
“The main difference between the War on Drugs and Prohibition is that, after 40 years, this country still hasn’t acknowledged that the War on Drugs is a failure,” said Cook County Commissioner John Fritchey, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
In what's perhaps the strongest show of support yet for legalizing recreational marijuana in Illinois, Fritchey was joined by State Representatives Kelly Cassidy (D-Chicago), Christian Mitchell (D-Chicago) and Mike Zalewski (D-Riverside) in calling for a task force to address all aspects of legalizing recreational marijuana, WGN reports."
Good luck Illinois. I hope you succeed and put another dent in the feds immoral prohibition against cannabis. Now if only my state of Ohio would wake up....

Minnesota is considering medicinal marijuana right now as well. Keep the faith--Ohio will get there. Once the first domino is pushed, they all begin to fall.

There were a couple of proposals here recently to get cannabis on the ballot. One proposal was for legalization of recreational cannabis, in which the petition was soundly rejected by attorney general Mike DeWine citing untrue language in the petition. The other proposal was for legalized medical cannabis, which I believe was accepted. Baby steps I gues. Unfortunately, Ohio has had a tendency to be the last to do anything. We're pretty lenient when it comes to possession, as small amounts have been decriminalized to the point that some are the equivalent of a traffic ticket. So, I suppose Ohio will probably be more likely to legalize before states like Florida (their laws around cannabis are much more stringent), Kansas, or Oklahoma (where possession of a single joint could land you in prison for a long time). Like I said though, it takes time for Ohio to do anything. It took several failed attempts to get legalized gambling in Ohio, and in the meantime all of our neighboring states had casinos, and all of that revenue was going to those states from our residents going across the border. Personally, I don't gamble, but I do recoginze the value as it is jobs and revenue in an old rust belt state that could surely use it.

It's definitely an economic reason for the push here in Illinois. I think lawmakers are eyeing the revenue Colorado is reaping and seeing it as a way out of the economic mess the state is in. In the end, it's always about money.
I believe it will be legal across the country within the next 10 years.

To bad it's going to be listed as "medical" as if adults can't decide how they want to use it. I would like them to decriminalize marijuana. Along with releasing those in prison for selling pot to adults and those who were caught with it in their possession............big waste of taxpayers $$$$$.

Decriminalization is only a band aid, but I like where you're going about releasing those in prison who sell cannabis to adults or caught with possession. Let LE focus on real criminals, who commit violent crimes, such as rape, murder, assault, pedophilia, or those who rob people blind... from the petty burglar to those Bernie Madoff types that have bilked people out of their life savings.
After thinking over the re action of legalization and seeing what is taking place in Colo. I am only for legalization if it includes a personal growing provision. The legalization in Colo. has sky rocketed weed prices, some places are charging 80 bucks for a 1/8th. Of course in that part of the country are better growers and they are getting the killer Here in Ohio are growers suck A$$ and don"t know how to treat weed.
With prices sky rocketing I would have to grow my own and be legally allowed to grow 4 plants to last a year. Right now in Ohio you are allowed up to 2 ounces in your home if you are growing that would equal 1 plant because they weigh stems leaves, the whole plant.
It's not like you get harassed over it in Chicago anyway, but good to know I'll soon be able to smoke in complete peace.
