I don't understand why he settled. His rights were violated by the police state. He could have rode that wave to far greater heights than he did. I'm surprised a greedy lawyer seeing the easy win and big payout didn't jump in to take advantage of a major case win. Too bad.

Well maybe it's got something to do with him having to live in that community as a gay man. Perhaps his lawyer advised him allowing the city to fall on it's sword without drawing any blood was as good a deal as he could walk away from without having to fear being hassled by those stupid cops for the rest of his days.

Think about whether or not you'd be ok with getting a j-walking ticket every time you stepped off the sidewalk, having your property constantly scrutinized for any possible code violations, being denied permits for any new construction you want to do, etc. I'm not saying any of that would be right, but it would be legal, and his only way out of it would be to move.
People should stand up for their rights, and this man did. There's nothing wrong with settling a suit.
like they say, ignorance of the law is no excuse, and the cops wee the ones that were ignorant. the city should have been paying out a few million instead of just $23,500.
Why would ANYONE agree to a gag order??? These stupid things need to be made illegal at the federal level.
gag order in place just tells me that the city wants to keep quiet how badly the cops screwed up.
