East Germany was unfortunate in that it was associated with the USSR and thus a hot spot during the cold war.
East Germany was actually better than West Germany in some respect. But after the wall came down West Germany destroyed what was good about East Germany, actually in a similar blind rejection that is typical of Americans. There were good companies in East Germany, but they were bought up, the knowledge was transferred to the West and then the Eastern originals were killed off. That is one reason why many people in East Germany still don't like the West. They feel their country was destroyed in a kind of sale.
I am talking about how they felt about socialism. When USSR collapsed east Germany basically was broke and couldn't pay even the salaries of many. West Germany made many sacrifice to taking east geramny when that happened. Just some with sour grapes.

These folks have a different reality. They see what they want to see, not reality. You have to treat them with kid gloves and play on their fantasies. They're not about to accept reality even if it smacked them in the face and screwed their mother.
Seriously.... Why are Americans so Anti-Socialised? Reading on this forum I am speechless.
They hate government restriction, hate labor law protecting workers, and so pro corporates. Are people brainwashed or whats going on?
Take a look at Germany as an example... Socialized nation with lower unemployment rate than us, higher quality of life, much less or no poverty, and largest economy in Europe. They have 82 million people, still a lot.
Does Germany have millions of illegal aliens feeding off the government and a group of politicians trying to buy their votes with tax money? Our nation's problem isn't capitalism, it's socialist/populist politicians trying to buy votes with tax money.
Just because Obama's dad took off and Obama internalize a sense of “fault” and his actions show he feel that burden by wanting government to be big daddy.

No but Germany is centralized around emerging economies. That's something you can't expect the tiny brains to understand.

what a BS.
you have clearly never been either West or East Germany.
Now the question - Should taxes be voluntary......? - - - YES - but that is impossible...because the state demands their pound of flesh under penalty of imprisonment or prolong personal economic harassment. Jesus Christ payed taxes...not because he believed in paying tribute to the state - but to avoid offending them and to avoid harassment or worse. So the why would be because you are under threat and the why not would be because no man belongs to the state....."Give to Cesar what is Cesar's - give to God what belongs to God"....What does that really mean? If everything including ourselves belongs to God- then in reality nothing belongs to Cesar....or the state. We pay tax because we are under duress and threat...so we pay.
There are about 40% of the people in this country who pay zero income taxes, so it's sort of voluntary for them. they fill out their tax returns, pay no taxes, and may even get money above and beyond what they paid in. I don't think any of these people turn down the extra money or pay taxes if they owe zero.
I am repeating the third time - you are totally free to go to North Korea to experience socialism in all it's beauty. Enjoy.
don't try to drag us all to that hell.
Misery loves company...
