66 years ago today, on May 14, 1948, The UN ended the British mandate in the Palestine area, announcing plans for a Jewish state, an Arab state, and a combined area in Jerusalem; and the residents of the Jewish area proclaimed the State of Israel.

A few hours later, the new Israel was attacked by combined forces of Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Iraq. And the attacks have gone one more or less continuously, ever since.

In this first conflict of the modern State of Israel, the Israelis captured enough territory from their attackers to increase its size by nearly 70% over what had been mandated by the UN. When the Arab nations attacked, many Arabic peoples fled the battle areas, and later called themselves "Palestinian refugees".

They even managed to pass an ordinance stating that their descendants (including those not yet born who had never lived in the embattled areas) would also be called "Palestinian refugees", thus making the "refugee" problem permanent and ever-expanding instead of assimilating into the areas they had fled to.

If the Arabs had all stayed put, rather than leaving in 1948, they'd be Israeli citizens now, but their "leadership", such as it was in 1948, assured them that if they left, the Jews would all be pushed into the sea, and they could go back to their homes and also gain the homes and lands of the Jews. Didn't work out the way they wanted.

If it keeps on going the way it has been going, the only possible future state of Palestine may be only in Gaza and that it. The Israeli population is growing and the Israeli gov't is no longer playing the sit and wait game after numerous initiatives over the past 66 years in an attempt to create a Palestinian State has failed. They can get all the UN backing they want, but in the end it means nothing.

You're assuming the "Palestinian" leadership wants a peaceful future.

They don't, of course. While most ordinary "Palestinians" do want peace, the militants and leadership want to destroy Israel. And they'll stunt, hold back, and destroy the futures of their own people, as they did with that "everyone is a refugee including their unborn children" stunt, as much as they have to in order to ensure unending war against Israel.

The only way you can have peace, is for both sides to want peace. The Israelis want it, the "Palestinians" don't. That's the basic reason why there has been no peace for 66 years.

I'm not assuming any such thing. The problem IS the leadership. Hamas leaders are multimillionaires from their Black Market economy and so is the Fatah leadership. Every time a check gets sent to the PA, most of it goes into the pockets of Fatah in the same manner it went into the pocket of Arafat. Fatah may be a watered down version of the PLO, but it is still the PLO with the same group of cronies. The Palestinian people want to live their lives as they did over 66 years. But their problems go further back another 20 years due to the Grand Mufti and his numerous years in alliance with Hitler and the Nazi party. And we can go further back to after the fall of the Ottoman empire, Syria attempted to annex the entire Mandate area.

The key factor is that in 1948 the Palestinian Arabs should have proclaimed their state according to the UN resolution instead of banding with the neighboring Arab countries to attack the Jewish state. Then they would have had a state instead of being in the sorry situation that they are now.

In the 1947 proposal the Arabs, a 70% majority, were offered 45% of their own country. Would you have taken that deal?

Basically 66 years ago a mistake was made. It would have made more sense of carving out a portion of Germany and making that a Jewish state.

No, Long Island would've been the perfect location for it, in terms of size, climate, and existing demographics.

The Palistinians got a dream offer which would have (supposedly) ended all this conflict. They turned it down, because they prefer conflict over peace. They are one stupid people.
