Hate Crime Hoaxes

These hoaxes seem to be increasing in frequency -- the problem is that the fake incident receives far more coverage and outrage than the retractions and coverage after they're found to be a hoax. Even when exposed as hoaxes, they've done their duty by creating outrage from fake circumstances in people who want to think these type of attacks are common.

Take this anti-gay hoax, for example:
Nebraska Woman Has Anti-Gay Slurs Carved Into Her Skin In Alleged Hate Crime - 2940 Facebook shares. 1000+ comments and any that suggest this might be a hoax are hammered into oblivion.

A month later, the truth comes out:
Charlie Rogers, Nebraska Lesbian And Alleged Hate Crime Victim, Charged With Making False Report - just 44 Facebook shares.

Most people only heard the original story and will never hear the truth come out. They only came away with the original outrage of the alleged attack.
