Seems to me that there is a push to become Pure Conservatives or Pure Liberals. This seems to correspond to a movement towards irrationality, intolerance, black and white thinking, and braindead insults. The GOP provides a textbook example of this lately. The party that once nominated intelligent guys like Eisenhower, Nixon, GHW Bush, etc. now puts forward televangelists like Bachmann, Perry, etc. I have a hard time seeing Eisenhower trying to "pray away the gay."

Folks who listen to Fox News or MSNBC or other partisan propaganda outlets are both choosing to dumb themselves down. It is self-evident that in a large, complex country, no single ideology can speak for all people, and the inability to see that obvious fact, is tearing the country apart, and it is just plain stupid.

you do realize that today our politicians are mild compared to what we had in the past right?

How far in the past? There was a thread here yesterday that had the republican party platform from 1960. It looks very similar to the current democrat party platform.

What does "mild" mean? Do you mean they act in a more civil manor, yet are just as crass?

I must be a genius because I rub the partisans on both sides equally. I've never understood people who follow a certain party line.

I have to agree. The extreme partisans on this forum pretty much can't think their way out of a paper bag on a number of topics.

The really bad ones even start to substitute reality like the guy that kept denying that Clinton signed NAFTA.

I truly believe some of them are mentally ill.

Depends on the era. We don't have Pelosi challenging Ted Cruz to a duel with pistols at noon like back in the day.

Well, no one has beat anyone with a cane recently, but in the last 50 years, I don't think I agree.

There used to be many moderate republicans, for example. Now, every republican faces an insurgent on the right, nuttier than the last. The net result is these wingbats get into congress and say brilliant things like we don't need FEMA, we should support intelligent design, global warming is a hoax, scientists are all liberal parasites know nothings, tax cuts raise revenues, etc. It is all because the voters have become party fundamentalists.

back in the days of jeffereson, politicians had actual duals when they had disputes. even into the late 1800s there were known to be fist fights in congress. if the current media were around back then, one could only imagine the stuff we would have heard about.

these day we have politicians that just resort to name calling and accusations.
