This cannot be re-stated enough.
For those that don't understand, my spending is your income and my income comes from your spending. If we all cut spending, we all suffer a loss of income.
In economic downturns, consumer demand falls. This can be mitigated with government spending that replaces consumer demand. If government goes on an austerity round in a weak economy, GDP drops, unemployment rises and government revenues fall. Thus, one still creates a deficit after the cutting.
