This logically explains why the mentally unhinged tea party keep whining about non-economic issues such as gays, contraception, and Obama's birth certificate.

Government Job Killer

Peter Beinart (a liberal/progressive) explained what is going on here:

Why the Shutdown is a Republican Victory - The Daily Beast

It is in spite of Obama, not because of him. It is primarily the GOP house steering the ship. They deserve much more credit than they've received.

I add total spending (inflation adjusted, 2005 dollars) to your list. (in trillions of dollars).

1970....6,085,000.... $0.982
1978....5,028,000.... 1.278
1984....5,088,000..... 1.501
1988....5,289,000..... 1.663
1992....4,931,000.... 1.857
1998....4,196,000.... 1.958
2003....4,210,000.... 2.304
2008....4,206,000.... 2.70
2009....4,430,000.... 3.17
2010....4,443,000.... 3.081
2011....4,403,000.... 3.126

So number of direct gov't employees is not a reliable measure of whether gov't is expanding or contracting.

And yet the right still wrongly claims spending is increasing. That just goes to show how completely untethered from reality the American right wing has become.

No, it just goes to how there is no lie a liberal will fail to believe and retell to support their position.

Your numbers aren't accurate. There were around 2.4 million federal employees in 1962 and now there are around 2.7 million.
