Because it's not true. The only thing I could find about PETA and shelter break-ins are articles in which PETA offers reward money for information leading to the arrest of some people who broke into shelters and killed animals.
Yeah, we all know PETA runs a small handful of shelters of last result - they take in the old, sick, and violent animals other shelters (specifically no-kill shelters) reject. And yes, they euthanize them - and rightfully so.

I thought I heard on the news several years ago, they broke into a animal research center and released a bunch of animals, I could be wrong.

No kill shelters are not always no kill, they will euthanize if the animal is unadoptable. As you said, old, sick and violent.

For the most part, no-kill shelters refuse to take any animal they don't consider adoptable. Often they refer these animals to PETA shelters knowing that PETA will do the humane thing and put them down.
One of the good things PETA does (and again, I'm not a PETA member or fan) is spend millions of dollars each year spaying and neutering tens of thousands of cats and dogs.
PETA has no answer, they break into shelters and release domestic animals that would not survive long in the wild, and suffer a cruel painful death. Screw PETA, I would say their extreme behavior is indicative of a mental health problem.
I will shoot on sight any feral dog or cat I see in the wild, and I am a dog lover. Feral dogs and cats are catastrophically bad for the wildlife. In the US feral dogs kill more wild turkeys than any other predator, including humans. Feral critters not only destroy the ecosystem, they are a health risk to humans and wild critters alike.
You said animal shelters, not research labs that use animals.
And I'm pretty sure you're confusing PETA with the Animal Liberation Front.
PETA supports the terrorist organizations ALF and ELF.
