That's awesome!! Glad we are keeping the criminals behind bars. I just wish the rest of the US would follow Texas' lead and enforce the death penalty so we don't have to pay taxes for their safe keeping, but that could just be the former DR correctional officer in me.

If you really are a correctional officer, you know it costs more to do death penalty than to house them. Prison system is an industry in the west coast, so I guess good for you- job security.

However, I disagree that other countries should follow our lead. We put people for some of the most petty stuff. The violent crimes are the ones we need to worry about.

That depends on where they are incarcerated, and for how long. The average incarceration in Texas before execution for a death Row inmate is 10 & 1/4 years at $24,500 per year making the expense over a 1/4 million. The average cost of execution including all factors and eleminating expenses that would incur either way is just under $100K.

I don't see it making much of a difference either way. Texas had 1,420 murders in 2007, but only 27 executions that same year. Assuming the numbers of victims and perps are roughly even, that means only 1.9% of homicides are likely to result in actual execution in any given year.

I mean, that's virtually nothing. You have a higher chance of dying on the operating table from a number of different procedures than paying with your life for killing somebody in Texas.

Any anomalies in the stats?

Like an over representation of particular groups?

Number of repeat offenders?

Types of crimes that result in incaceration being over represented?

Just curious.

Yeah, you're right. I'd much rather be a country like - say - Sudan. They have virtually NOBODY behind bars. And that must mean that country is VERY advanced, VERY peaceful and VERY good.

Thats because of liberals.
The death penalty should cost about a nickle. add on a couple dollars to dig a hole for the body & we just saved untold tens of thousands of dollars.

I agree we worry about some petty things, but alot of inmates shouldn't be sucking off of society.
