So now the patent office is deciding the context of what is derogatory? So if I want to name my snack food after a football team, I can't because some bureaucrats has deemed the name is offensive?

U.S. Trademark Office Says ‘Redskins’ is Derogatory « CBS DC

WASHINGTON (CBSDC/AP) — There will be no trademark for “Redskins Hog Rinds,” a bad omen for the Washington Redskins in the legal battle over their name.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has rejected a request from a company to sell pork rinds using the word “Redskins” because it deemed the term to be “derogatory slang.”

In a letter dated Dec. 29, the agency wrote: “Registration is refused because the applied-for mark REDSKINS HOG RINDS consists of or includes matter which may disparage or bring into contempt or disrepute persons, institutions, beliefs, or national symbols.”

The AP writer seems to have taken a side on this issue, since he added quotes from a native American who also agrees with the government.

Not all native Americans agree with Halbritter, who is from a New York tribe, not a Virgina tribe. so we have someone from a different state telling the native Americans of Virginia area what they can name their state's football team.

Retired Native American Chief Would Be Offended If Redskins Did Change Name « CBS DC

In response, the longtime chief of a major Virginia-based tribe went on the record to say he’d actually be offended if the team DID change the name.

Robert “Two Eagles” Green, who retired from his presiding role over the 1300-member Patawomeck Tribe in March, was a guest on SiriusXM NFL Radio’s “The Opening Drive” on Wednesday.

He gave a detailed account of the origin of the term Redskin, why so many people are offended by it, and how political correctness has allowed this story to fester far longer than it should.

Ray Halbritter is the man that is leading this campaign against the Washington Redskins. The interesting part is that the Oneida Tribe (that he claims to lead) says he is not even a member and they have been trying to get control of their lands from Halbritter for over a decade now.

Casino Kingpin and Fake Indian Chief Targets Redskins

Halbritter is the CEO of an entity called the Oneida Indian Nation INC. He is a Harvard Lawyer who is the self stylized "Al Sharpton' of Native Americans. In the meantime, he has stolen Tribal Lands and made himself into a Billionaire. He must think there is Big Money in going after the NFL and Washington Redskins. There has never been a credible poll of any sort to actually learn how Native Americans think about the Team name.

Documents: Anti-Redskins Indian leader not a legitimate member of his tribe

One thing is for sure - Halbritter is very politically connected.

Quote:
In 1993, the Grand Council of Chiefs removed Mr. Halbritter as the Oneida wolf clan representative and notified the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) that he no longer represented the Oneida people. The decision was accepted by the BIA, only to be reversed 24 hours later, reportedly under pressure from Sherwood Boehlert, the U.S. congressional representative for the area and a casino supporter.

Today the U.S. government but not the Grand Council of Chiefs gives official recognition to the Oneida Indian Nation with Ray Halbritter as its representative.

While it is most certainly offensive, the government has no business denying a trademark on that ground.

There we go. There are currently there are over 700,000 patent applications awaiting review and they'll wait an average of over two years for an initial response, yet Obama's U.S. Patent and Trademark Office is stepping into the Redskin squabble. I would love to see government shut down again, maybe for a year this time.

I'd be happy if they shut the government down until January 2017.

Every time I think "Obama could not be a bigger idiot", he proves me wrong. SURELY we have something better to worry about in DC.

Could not agree more with you on this.

The bigger idiots indeed, are those that don't see a problem with whatever Obama makes himself in charge of.

Some people stick their noses where they definitely don't belong. Once we give into them, there is no stopping them Period!

No ... it is most certainly idiotic to declare the name offensive when a freaking Indian Chief says it is not, and provides the history showing that the term "Redskin" was coined by indians in reference to themselves.

I'm 1/4 native american myself, and a die hard Redskin fan. Even the logo shows a noble Chief .... which, by the way, native americans help design!!!
