"But one of the things I’ve talked to the secretary of agriculture about: Why don’t you have the kids pay a dime, pay a nickel to instill in them that there is, in fact, no such thing as a free lunch? Or maybe sweep the floor of the cafeteria -- and yes, I understand that that would be an administrative problem, and I understand that it would probably lose you money. But think what we would gain as a society in getting people -- getting the myth out of their head that there is such a thing as a free lunch," he said.

I have always been in favor of "Workfare".
I am not, however, in favor of child labor. Put the parent(s) to work sweeping floors or cleaning toilets, and let the kid(s) see what it takes to get them their "free" lunch or breakfast!

Yes. It's the parents' fault, NOT the kids', that they can't afford to pay for their kids' meals.

I wouldn't mind the parents doing a bit of manual labor, but I wouldn't involve the kids in it. It's not their fault.

I work for a school cafeteria, and there are some youngsters who would never have a decent meal were it not for what they were served in school. It is not THEIR fault their parents can't/don't/won't provide for them. Receiving free/reduced lunches is still a stigma that makes kids a social outcast. Our shool has "debit" cards that pretty much keeps it anonymous. Imagine being seen by your classmates sweeping or mopping up to earn your lunch?
Off topic a bit, but our local elementary schools offer "Head Start", and meals are served to these kids "family style" while seated at the table. This is the only exposure some of these kids have to being served and eating a meal using table manners and learning proper use of utensils at the table. A sad commentary about our society.
