Why would natural selection then turn us into one of the wimpiest species?
Evolution works with what it has on hand - it's not a directed process. Our primate forefathers happened to inhabit a niche that favored larger brains capable of communication and cooperation. What we consider non-wimpy animals tend to be apex predators, and those rarely benefit from cooperation. Polar bears don't hunt in packs.
According to "evolutionary scientists" give it a few billion years and anything is possible.
