I think you are misunderstanding Republicans. Don't you know it was Republicans who did everything important on civil rights ever. The issue is that since racism is now over, except for racism from minorities and Democrats, we don't really need civil rights.
None of you get it. Government, which wrote the repugnant Jim Crow laws, didn't come around until we the people using civil disobedience forced their hand. The Civil Rights marches and all those courageous people who put their livelihood on the line were the game changers not government.
There is a good reason for that. The republican party of the 60s is not the same party of the 21st century.
Neither party is the same.
The Republican deployment of the Southern Strategy to gain political support for certain candidates in the southern states by appealing to racism, turned many states from Blue to Red.
In 2005, the Republican National Committee issued an apology for exploiting racial conflicts.

I think you may have mean "lives" although livelihood also works.

I would love to see Buchanan or some other nutbar start a counter-civil rights civil rights movement. Complete with marches on Washington and freedom riders and everything.
I would have to agree with Pat on this one. As a nation, we have seriously gone down hill since the Civil Rights Act was passed in the 60's. The section ruling on private industry was flatly unconstitutional. The Act had these elements added by Emmanuel Celler (D - N.Y.) after hearings during the negotiation. Republicans, though they were widely in support of the Act should have demanded this be taken out. It was blatantly an expansion of government illegaly into the private sphere, and short-sighted people that they were, they never imagined how the amount of abuses would ensue.
You agree with such claptrap only because you are the discriminator and have never experienced being discriminated against the way blacks were. Then you would be singing a very different tune.
Let's get this straight shall we. It is Southerners (former CSA) of both parties that opposed the bill and Northerners of both parties (though more Democrats) that supported.
House:
Southern Democrats 7% yes, 93% no.
Southern Republicans 0% yes, 100% no
Northern Democrats 94% yes, 6% no
Northern Republicans 85% yes, 15% no
Senate:
Southern Democrats 5% yes, 95% no (1-20)
Southern Republicans 0% yes, 100% no (only one senator)
Northern Democrats 98% yes, 2% no (Robert Byrd)
Northern Republicans 84% yes, 16% no
true, but note that at the time the republicans were a distinct minority party in the south, and were also the overall minority party, and without the republican vote, the civil rights act would not have passed.
So what specifically is so bad about the Civil Rights Act as it stands today?
