I don't buy Putin's justification and it has no standing under international law, but try looking at it this way: Imagine that Baja California was largely populated by Americans, then the elected Mexican government was removed and replaced by a new regime that is openly hostile to Americans and acts to revoke many of the freedoms they previously had. Don't you think the US would do whatever it took to ensure the safety of those people?
There was no threat to citizens that considered themselves ethnically Russian, the same excuse was used in Georgia. Ukraine is entitled to their self determination and removal of a corrupt leader that was connected to Putin, that is what drove Russia. When Putin sends in troops to "protect" people, watch out.

One of the first orders of business for the new/rebel government was to remove Russian as a language for gov't services.

The Constitution declares Ukrainian language as the state language of the country, while other languages spoken in Ukraine are guaranteed constitutional protection.
In August 2012, a law on regional languages entitled any local language spoken by at least a 10% minority be declared official within that area.[23] Russian was within weeks declared as a regional language in several southern and eastern oblasts and cities.[24] On 23 February 2014, the law on regional languages was abolished, making Ukrainian the sole state language at all levels. The bill repealing the law was voted by 232 deputies out of 450.

How would you like Cherokee being declared an official language of the US, with a constitutional protection for English, of course? Would you like that?
Big part of Ukraine, namely Crimea and eastern Ukraine is inhabited by people who DO NOT speak Ukrainian. Many of them considered themselves Russian speaking Ukrainians and many simply Russians. Forcing the to learn and use Ukrainian is not going to fly.

But they are in Ukraine also your example doesn't make any sense That would mean the UK now has the right to invade the us because the official language was changed from English to Cherokee.
No. What you are saying doesn't have any sense as you lack basic knowledge about the region. Let it go.
