Everyone talks about Carson's lack of political/gov't experience, and I do think it's a legit point. On the other hand, we've had a string of experienced politicians as Presidents, and how has that worked out? One of the best of modern presidents was Ike, who had no prior political experience. Ronald Reagan had no political experience until running for gov at age 56. HW Bush was brimming with DC experience. Ambassador to the UN, CIA director, US House member, and VP, but he didn't know about grocery store bar code readers.
The more experience the more tendency to micro-manage. Bill Clinton said that the key to being president was putting together a good team, and letting them do their thing.
Reagan didn't end the Cold War -- economics did. The USSR could not sustain the pace of their military buildup. Reagan just happened to be president when it all fell apart. Nothing he did made much difference...he was just at the end of a long chain of circumstances stretching back to 1945.
The conventional wisdom was that the USSR was stable, and would endure for a long time to come:

This is nonsense basically. Black people are only going to vote for a black candidate who does a great impersonation of Santa Claus and promises to take from the rich to give to the poor, while taking from the middle class to give to the rich.
93% of black America think Obama is doing a fantastic job.
If you were to take them out of the mix, Obama's approval rating would be somewhere south of 20%.
I was not impugning his reputation, he is great story but politics is a different animal and he is just not experienced.
We need more ordinary citizens in politics, not career politicians. We have more than enough of those guys. Let some fresh blood in and maybe things can get done.

During Reagan's tenure there was actually a slight decrease in domestic spending (the only of the past 9 presidents who can say that). All the spending increases went to the military, which resulted in victory in the Cold War (not according to me, but according to the Russians). Was it worth it? Yes. Would you prefer to have Poland, the Baltic states, East Germany, etc. still living under socialist enslavement?
If you'd asked me that 15 years ago, I would have said hell no. Now I'm not so sure. In these uncertain times I sometimes long for the single enemy that could be rational over the many different radicalized fanatics that seem to welcome death. The Third World would not be in the midst of a nuclear arms race if we were still in the Cold War. Not that I wish the Soviet Union would return, just reflecting.

Actually I thought it was a funny comment. Obama did lie to us multiple times, on camera, and sold a plan that would take over one-sixth of the U.S. economy based on it. If he was in the private sector, the guy would be serving time already. If he was a republican, the press and most likely the congress would be investigating him day and night for months. It's not a crazy statement at all.
