People should read the problems with the VA with great care. That is what socialized medicine will look like. Got bladder cancer? We'll check you out in 9 months.
Some VA's are crowded because they are in catchment areas; drawing folks from a large
geographical area for their services.
If we had a single payer system, folks could go to any doc/hospital like those on Medicare do.
The real problem in this VA fiasco is what drove fed employees to do what they did to get bonuses.
Fed employees should not get bonuses.
They are not in a private enterprise setting and they do not make a profit.
"patients at Hines were kept on “secret waiting lists” so executives could collect bonuses linked to meeting standards for speedy treatment"
What you have here is overpaid execs trying to make more money than they really are
entitled to, at the expense and lives of our servicemen/women.
It has nothing to do with socialized medicine, per se.
This past Feb I was talking to a couple from Canada. They confirmed that there are long wait times and lower quality healthcare. This couple solved the problem by buying additional personal healthcare insurance.
Either you're lying or they are.
Additional personal healthcare insurance covers things like glasses, dental, ambulance, private rooms, physio, acupuncture. therapeutic massage, etc.

Only in America would having universal health care for its citizens be a bad thing
Well it doesn't look like the average primary care doc is exactly motivated to see more patients either.
No physician is motivated to see anyone at the VA. In other "socialized" systems, like University Hospitals, there are expectations of performance that are made in clinical practice. Of course, one has teaching and research duties as well.
At the VA, seeing very few patients is the norm. Again, part of it is laziness, but part of it is due to the fact that the VA has physicians performing secretarial duties that we actually delegate to secretaries or nurses outside of the VA.
Further, the medical directors are given bonuses to restrict the formulary. Fewer non formulary drugs prescribed = better medical director bonus.

Are you talking about the US? Most healthplans do not cover acupuncture or massage, as there is no randomized, blinded, prospective studies showing benefit when compared to placebo. People can, however, use their own flex/medical savings accounts for these services.
You cannot "buy" a private room in most hospitals (there are some exceptions). You get what everyone gets, regardless of means. Eye care and dental is covered under separate insurance.

Are you capable of understanding basic English?
I was responding to a poster who claimed he heard from Canadians that getting private insurance will deal with wait times.

We knew libs would say lack of funding was the problem sooner or later.... read "higher taxes". Their answer always is to throw more money at the problem.

Yep......you can't put yourself in a better position than others in Canada.

One would think having health care for our veterans would be a good thing.
Far fewer would be against things like universal health care if so much graft, waste, corruption, ignorance and incompetence wasn't built into it.
