....the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

Where in the bill of rights does it say this amendment requires a license?
Why is the second amendment the only amendment that you need to get a license for?

Don't know what state your in, but most states don't require a license to own a gun. And you are right... the constitution is your license.

Some states and localities require that a person obtain a license or permit in order to purchase or possess firearms.

Above shows list of states.

Well, there you go!

With all the bleating about 'states rights' by conservatives, this is what they get.

It's a two-edged sword.

To protect the government from the citizenry. No other reason.

Gun licensing and registration is one massive intelligence gathering effort for Dictator Sam. They are the only people "made safer" by citizens having to secure/produce "papers" in order to exercise an individual natural right so fundamental it comes second only to religion, speech and writing in the list of freedoms the Founding Fathers felt necessary to specifically name in the Bill of Rights.

Gun laws started with keeping black people down and making it so they couldn't argue with their oppressors who didn't feel like paying attention to junk like the 14th and 15th Amendments. They got worse when a panicked federal and Illinois government couldn't figure out that the way to end Capone was repealing Prohibition instead of gun bans. Now, it is a simple intel effort so that the agents of tyranny know where all the "troublemakers" are.

There is no requirement for a licence to excercise your 2nd amendment right. People conflate right to bear arms...knives, baseball bats, spears, nunchucks...with firearms.

I have a 2x4 with some nails in it sitting by my front door...I don't have a licence for it.

I always thought the answer was because it's the only amendment the subject of which can be used to massacre people. Then again, all those drive-by killings with free speech … mowing down of small children with the separation of church and state …perhaps we should rethink the matter after all.

As has been alluded, there is no federal requirement to license most firearms (some exceptions, like fully automatic weapons. But no license is necessary to own a howitzer).

Remember that the Bill of Rights was written by the Founding Fathers as a limitation on the power of the federal government, not state governments. It has been applied to the states piecemeal by the Supreme Court--there is no court ruling that applies the Bill of Rights as a blanket to the states.

If the Supreme court kept hands off states rights--as most conservatives desire--there would be nothing to prevent Illinois from banning firearms completely from public ownership.

The states can't violate the Constitution any more than the federal government can. Do you think that a state law prohibiting black people from voting would pass Constitutional muster?
