Immigration hearings is not like criminal court where a public defender is provided.
And this is why NYC is doing this.
There are probably too many immigrants in the system for the pro bono lawyers to handle.
FYI..the Senate Immigration bill that passed does make a provision that the USG will provide lawyers to illegals facing deportation at no charge to them. So what NYC is now doing will become the law of the land once amnesty passes.
In the meantime, while waiting for their hearings watch how many of these "kids" get pregnant, deliver their anchor babies, and make the deportation hearing (if they ever show up) useless. What a waste of tax dollars.

I read the backlog is somewhere in the number of 350,000 give or take and can take up to 2 years before the first hearing.
I don't believe the Obama administration has any plans to add more people to shorten that wait time.

The Senate bill did not pass the House and there will be no amnesty.
Actually, I do understand. If you are on US soil, then you fall under the jurisdiction of the US Constitution. That means anyone in any US State, territory, or in Washington D.C., is protected by the US Constitution.
Why do you think we are keeping POWs in the war on terrorism in GITMO, which is not US soil, instead of somewhere in the US?
Actually, a military base is considered U.S. soil wherever it's located. The difference is there are no Otherwise, the sole U.S. authority is the military.
Please! those aren't "poor city residents who have been detained in the immigration system and are facing deportation." Those are potential Democrat voters who have as little regard for this country, its laws and sovereignty as do their handlers and advocates.
