Do you think something like this would get passed in today's political climate?

Quote:
"Congress had considered, and failed to pass, a civil rights bill every year from 1945 to 1957. In 1957, Congress finally managed to pass a limited Civil Rights Act, which it added to in 1960, but these bills offered black Americans only modest gains. It wasn't until 1963, in a televised speech, that President Kennedy called for a robust Civil Rights Act. Kennedy began his address by talking about the two black students who had recently enrolled in the University of Alabama, but needed the presence of Alabama National Guardsmen in order to safely attend classes."

Dang, I sure hope so! Otherwise, we still have a lot of sit-ins and ducking firehoses in front of us!

I believe there is still a need to be able to get bipartisan bills passed. Sooner or later we will have to come up with a plan on the millions of illegal immigrants that are living in America. That said, there will always be civil rights issues in America that will have to be addressed. But I seriously doubt that anything can get passed in the partisan environment of today.

that all well and good, but it fails to mention that the 1957 civil rights bill was a watered down version of the 1964 civil rights act that johnson signed into law. they also dont mention that it was johnson that got the bill watered down in the senate in 1957.

if we are going to rehash history, lets make it the accurate history instead of what some writer wants to portray.

Obstructionism is a major issue for reasons larger than the scope of race relations when it comes to civil rights....

But yet, in today's society race/culture is still the single biggest phenomenon that muddles up progress. It REALLY becomes an inanity when you consider that EVERY group has equal protections under the law with a few trivial exceptions....and many have heightened protections.

So, did you ever ask yourself what exactly the "parties" are trying to hold up?
