I am getting an enormous amount of money driving trainloads of the stuff. Not coming by pipeline, it will be coming by train.

NAFTA. Remember that?

Oh and the railroads got the right-of-way by eminent domain.
Why did the pipeline have to go all the way down to a port city in Texas? The US has many refineries closer to the Canadian border.

Why not. I am sure the question deals with where the output of the refinery is to be sent.

If only you knew how much pipeline already exists transpoting oil all throughout N.A but its ok lets pretend they don't exist so we can all feel better...Ultimately the oil if not facilitated through pipeline transportation will be transported by surface - mainly rail and ask the residents of lac megantic how they feel about that.

Tar sand oil is notoriously hard on pipelines, and it will wear these pipes out at a far faster rate than conventional oils. Furthermore, when this oil has spilled in the past, like it did once in Michigan, it has taken years to clean it up, and many say that the Michigan spill cannot even be cleaned up.

Because, once refined, it will ship off to China or another country.

Sure there is no perfect solution and there are some risks with pipelines and rail but for whatever reason someone in the U.S wants that oil shipped to the U.S and as I mentioned Canada is the biggest exporter of oil to the U.S over any country. I'd almost like to see Canada freeze all oil exports to the U.S just to see how much the biggest consumer of oil in the world would fare. Something tells me Keystone would be approved mightily quickly thereafter... Shall we give it a whirl and see what happens? Hey we could just make N.A amish and call it a day... A cleaner, simpler and enviro friendly way of life...

Think of it this way though, if some unstable M.E wackos cut oil exports to the U.S atleast there would be a solid backup to keep the U.S running tickety boo.

And we in the US might turn around and make a good offer to the Prairie provinces to join up. They dislike Ontario bad enough it might sell.

Or we might continue with the general rule that the three countries of north america generally pull together as a single economic entity.

They wouldn't willingly join the U.S nor would Canada simply allow simple dissolution- you'd have to take em by force and peeve off the rest of the civilized world.. Besides at the end of the day you'd still end up with tar sand oil and guess what - build Keystone yourself lol so what differnce would it make. Go ahead give it a shot, lemme know how that works out for ya

second part of your post, I think Canada is a good economic partner to the U.S now but if you think Venezuela are more trustworthy than by all means invite Maduro home for dinner - he gunuinely loves the U.S as does the average Saudi....

oh wait, weren't most involved in 9/11 from said country and wasn't it Canadians who welcomed 10000 American passengers of diverted flights into their homes welcomingly as friends... So confusing who your friends are...??? Canada is becoming increasingly confused who our friends are!
