Military bans troops from Baptist church event honoring 'God's Rescue Squad' - Washington Times

Keep in mind that a US court ruled against police officers who did not want to attend a community outreach program at an Islamic mosque. In this case, a local church was holding dinners to honor different groups on different days. They included police and firefighters. They also invited members of the nearby National Guard base. This was part of a vacation bible school program introducing the kids to these groups and a way to express their gratification to them for the job they do. The US Military ordered the troops not to attend the event.

That's where my brother lives, and he's in the National Guard. I'm going to have to ask him what they were told.

It states: “Army participation must not selectively benefit (or appear to benefit) any person, group, or corporation (whether profit or nonprofit); religion, sect, religious or sectarian group, or quasi-religious or ideological movement.”

The policy also states that troops are to avoid any activities that might involve or appear to involve the promotion, endorsement, or sponsorship of any religious or sectarian movement.
It really is that simple. The church could have asked a number of the soldiers to volunteer to show up in uniform, in an unofficial capacity without the humvee, and that would have been just fine.
