Shouldn't respect depend on personal qualities rather than solely on profession?

CEOs. By far.

They are immediately, unforgivably, relentlessly accountable to the shareholders. They don't get a set block of time, they get evaluated every single day the stock is being traded. Every decision, every action, all the time. The best CEO in the world is one bad day on the market from unemployed, if that's what the shareholders want. And while they do have certain political privileges, they have to buy that privilege and the politician can revoke said privileges on a whim, since CEOs hold exactly zero power over actually making, passing, and enforcing laws.

Politicians have nowhere near the accountability, while holding exactly all the power to do whatever they freaking please, at least until the next election, where lying will typically save their bacon since voters are, by maybe 97% majority, clueless gooftards who don't know how to spell the words "issues" and "policies".

I really dislike most politicians.

We had a great congressman........then there was a redistricting......now he is not our congressmen.

He is retiring after this term.

The man who because our congressmen sat in our family room and lied to me and others from the township that was there that day.

He lied about how he would vote on the ACA.......he was the deciding vote for it.

Then he did not run again and moved out of state.

Not only do I not respect politicians, I loathe them. They are the mentally-ill who seek an office of "authority" to enforce through aggression their beliefs upon their fellow man.

Right now it would be CEOs, and that is because there are plenty of companies that good CEOs. In regards to politicians I can only think of a handful on top of my head who I respect. Also CEOs work more in a month then most politicians, so that is another factor why I voted for them.

I only respect individuals. A position they hold or a group they belong to never warrants respect. Also, the term respect has two meanings. There's people I've met and people I know about, and I can respect both but in distinctly different ways. I've never met a CEO or a politician (technically), but either way, to achieve legitimate respect, I'd have to meet them in person. For example, I've met various business owners, many of whom I respect because they do their best to make an honest living and are good people.

As for people I've never met, let's look at Bill Gates. I don't know him at all. I know he's active in all kinds of humanitarian things, and I respect him for that. But I can't say with absolute certainty that I respect him in the same way I respect some of the people I actually know. By that I mean he could be doing those charities and such for publicity so people will like him, and I don't respect that. But he may do it because he cares a lot, and I'd respect that. I've never met him and can't pass honest or informed judgement on why he does what he does.

Between politicians and CEOs... same as above. I might like certain things they do, but I don't know them well enough to warrant them personal respect.

Politicians, I guess. Hard choice. I despise both. I don't like most politicians, but there are at least some who respectable and who haven't sold themselves out to special interests. Are there respectable CEOs? Maybe, but I sure can't think of any specific examples.
