How come that, even with luvy duvy "diversification" we have more violence than we did in the 1950s/early 1960s? I thought the 1950s were supposed to be evil because white people are.
According to the graph, crime has been on the decline. Problem is that many people won't treat each other with respect. High crime rates can be had in places with homogeneous populations if the people have no respect for one another.
Another problem is that crimes are much more in the public knowledge. Probably makes it seem a bigger problem than it is when looking at the country as a whole.
Only a conservative would start a thread asking why the crime rate is up and illustrate it with not one, not two, but three separate graphs showing that the crime rate is falling.

Not only is it public knowledge, there is a saying in journalism. If it bleeds, it leads.
No one would be crazy enough to believe there aren't any rough areas. There have always been rough areas. According to one graph on this thread, murder rates had another spike during the 20s and 30s. Prohibition Era.
Right now, the crime rate is trending downward. It is just more public knowledge now. It is in the news alot more than it used to be.
Consider this. In 1926, Tampa,FL had a murder rate around 67 murders per 100,000. Jacksonville had one of around 75 murders per 100,000. Today's murder rates in those cities are lower.

It's largely due to the baby boom and age demographics.
In 1955 33% of the population was under 18.
In 2013 23% of the population was under 18.
Adults have much higher violent crime rate than children.
