Uhmmm...I live in a stat that has a higher minimum then the federal rate.
LOL. And thats the point, where can you live on the federal minimum wage? At $10 or $11 it still wont cover a lot of places....and yet....why dont those places have a higher number now? because they all expect the feds to decide it.
No. Because no one is pushing it at the city level.
You don't have the activists living in all cities like you do in Seattle.
People have to push their city leaders for it.
Seattle socialists have been pushing for a $15/hr minimum wage, but the real goal is closer to $20/hr as even movement leader and self-described 'Marxist' Kshama Sawant has stated. She has said that $15 is just a nice round number that appears attainable right now, but that she has bigger and better goals in mind. Hey...good for her, she is willing to embrace the reductio ad absurdum that liberals would so often shy away from.
They are really undermining themselves here though. If a young programmer could get a $13/hr job as a web designer at the Freedom Socialist (oxymoron much?) party, and do a good job, he/she could probably rise up through the ranks and end up with a nice paying career. If the $20/hr minimum wage were to be imposed, the position would never be offered, and the young programmer might end up on food stamps and SSD.
The home of the $17 hamburger, $10 fries and $10 cokes..... $37 to eat lunch. The stinking rich may not bat an eye.
But all the unemployed people would just have to do without.

I had min wage for about 2 years when I first started out..McDonald's in fact.
Every other job after that was in an office and at a higher wage.
$20 / hour is about what minimum wage would be if it kept up with productivity.
So $41,600 - $20 hr - is your target living wage? What planet do you all live on?
Plenty of people do hard labor you appreciate everyday but care little for how an item was produced, packaged or delivered into your grimy mitts. i doubt many of them earn $20 hr. However, they earn what the market bears and the market includes you getting a deal on whatever you may be purchasing. Chances are you are overpaid as well. How about cutting the next store clerk you see a check for $500 so the federal government won't have to?

The planet where productivity gains were evenly distributed. I know thats a hard concept, but imaging if we all shared equally in income gains instead of it all going to the top.....$20/hr is what it would look like.
Really.
Now think about that. Let that settle in.
Yeah....
Keep in mind-I dont think its reasonable, but it IS what it would be like if productivity gains were equally distributed.
When minimum wage for Wal-Mart greeters is $20, you're going to start seeing thousands of applications submitted for each opening. I'd love to have a side job where I'm paid $20 or even $15 an hour for doing hardly any work. That's like a dream job.
Good luck to all the low skill workers who don't even have a high school degree. But libs don't care about them anyway, they just want more money for themselves!
While there may be a flurry of applications when the job is advertised at $20 per hour, they will rapidly die as the cost of living catches up with the wage increases, and the buying power of the $20 per hour declines to the current level.
I hope you realize that if the minimum wage is increased, those who are now making MORE than the current minimum will want a commensurate increase to keep them at the same level or more above the new minimum. So, someone who is now making $10 more than the current minimum is going to want to keep that $10 over minimum as a measure of their worth. If you set the minimum at $20 per hour, are you willing for those who are now making $17.25 per hour at a rate of $30 per?

I think I have asked you before to show me where inflation has suddenly increased due to minimum wage. Apparently the concept is too hard for folks.
Market price would be $1/hr. People would still work for that in order to get food stamps. Basically you are all for subsidizing employees via government transfers. IE a mixed capitalist socialist system.
Whereas by increasing the minimum wage im suggesting more of a capitalist with government involovement in setting base pay levels.
Soooo....you're apparently the socialist in this conversation.....
LOL. OK that was mean, but kinda on point.
Now for my socialist side....My number is based upon historical minimum wages along with the idea that giving over 95% of the gains in gdp to the 1% is not beneficial to us as a whole.
Socialism=government ownership of the means of production. What does that have to do with the minimum wage law?
I would not agree to work for $1/hr. My productivity is worth much more than that. If that is what my employer offered, I would laugh in their face, walk across the street and offer my services to a different employer.
Your number is a sheer guess. You have no idea whether the minimum wage should be $1, $10.10, $15, or why not go whole hog and have a minimum wage of $1 million per year? You have zero basis for setting a minimum wage other than pulling numbers out of the air. I would set minimum wage at whatever employer and employee agree to, as with any other market price. If you want to work for zero in order to gain experience, you should be allowed to do that. In fact if you want to pay to gain work experience, as in vanity publishing, why not? This allows maximal options for traders on both sides of the labor market, and thus makes everyone better off. You don't make people better off by eliminating options.
