Texas does create mostly low-wage jobs. I see nothing wrong with this idea. The reality is, tips are used to justify paying servers slave wages. Then these poor servers come across self-righteous ******* religious people who refuse to tip, making the house pick up the tab to get them to minimum wage. Adding a mandatory gratuity is already standard most places for large parties. In other countries, tipped employees such as servers get the minimum wage regardless of tips.
This article just reinforces how backwards America is. Your negative attitude towards it just reinforces how low we have sunk as a culture in regards to the dignity of work.
Five restaurants to be exact. And, there are a lot of restaurants in San Fran.
So, a few want to add 20 percent, or as this guy puts it:
"But very soon, they'll both be known for being among the city's only non-tipping eating establishments.
"You go to Europe, you go to Japan, service is a line item or it's included in the price of food," said restaurant co-owner Thad Vogler. "We've always thought that that was a nice idea. It gets rid of the awkward thing at the end of the meal."
Vogler says he fully expects a $15 minimum wage hike in San Francisco's future. So instead of tips, his team's two restaurants will collect a flat 20 percent service charge"
SF is nothing like Europe, and really neither is their food, but if that is what these establishments want to do, the consumer will decide if they want to eat there with this new 20 percent tip or not. If it were me, it would definitely be a NOT.
Those opposed to this idea -- which, let us repeat, is a voluntary measure being taken by 5 restaurants in the entire city -- probably believe that low-class peons like waiters and bussers should have to grovel and scrape for every single penny they get.
Great idea. San Fran servers & bartenders should have ALL their tips fully taxed, pooled & then split "equitably" with the chefs, cooks, dishwashers et al. If they think socialism is great, this will give them a real taste of it.

The only people losing on this deal are bad tippers, servers & bartenders. In an industry absolutely rife with tax fraud, this should cut their monthly earnings by 30-50%. Plus, as I read this, they're no longer going to receive the tips they earn, but rather have one "service" pool that will be split up to include the kitchen staff.
We always leave a 20% tip in restaurants. Their wages depend on this. But a lot of people are scrooges and leave virtually nothing. And many restaurants have a policy that the tip would be added on with a certain amount of people.
