It's called "Create your Taste" with kiosks deployed at the table where you can create your own custom burger.
It will cost a bit more and take more time to get to your table, but it went over well in test markets in California.
So they are expanding it to 30 locations in 5 states with further expansions slated for next year.

Soon the cashiers won't have to worry about not getting their $15/hour at McDonalds.
They can go look for new jobs and demand that $15/hour.

McDonald's expands custom sandwich option
Responding to declining same-store sales, falling stock prices and a shrinking base of younger customers, the world's largest fast-food chain will announce plans to vastly expand its "Create Your Taste" test platform.

Create Your Taste lets customers skip the counter and head to tablet-like kiosks where they can customize everything about their burger, from the type of bun to the variety of cheese to the many, gloppy toppings and sauces that can go on it.
..
What has until now been a tiny test in four Southern California stores is immediately expanding to 30 locations in five more states and in 2015 to 2,000 U.S. locations, or about one in seven of the 14,000 domestic McDonald's restaurants, says Watson. The five additional states: Illinois, Wisconsin, Georgia, Missouri and Pennsylvania.

Conservatives are funny animals. They are happy to see people go out of work just to make a point. They'll rape, wreck, and pillage this country just to show those "leftists" who's boss

My local KFC is doing something similar as well. The front counter people tell you to ask how you could not talk to them. Pretty demeaning.

But this has nothing to do with $15/hr this is the automation people like me and others tell you about. You know, the one thats a threat to 50% of the jobs in America.

You probably shouldn't get too excited about it, its going to be what causes us to consider a basic income.

7 Minutes to get your crappy "food" and it will cost $9? Why not go to a real restaurant/deli?

Someone still needs to bring the food to the table and manually make it when the kiosk goes wrong (if the kiosk even makes all those customized sandwiches in the first place).

This is a move out of desperation IMO. McDonald's enjoyed a very nice run but their only option now is to grow in countries that are not aware of the quality of their food.

"But the chain needs to take risks. It recently reported its worst same-store sales decline in more than a decade. McDonald's stock has lagged its peers. CEO Don Thompson knows that if results don't improve sooner rather than later, his job could be on the line. In the third quarter, when McDonald's earnings plunged 30%, Thompson conceded that the company had lost relevance for key young consumers. "

This was inevitable and many more variations will come. Even today's technology makes it easy and cpst effective (especially with escalting employee salary/benefit costs). Some skill workers will have employment, but far fewer jobs overall.

More of this to come...and the tech/capabilities will get better to enable more apps. and fewer workers.

Im sure eventually they will add automation to deliver it to your table as well.

Its all about the customization that automation can deliver. For fun I used to order a double burger with a extra patty, triple cheese, and no pickles or fries. It often took them three tries to get it right. No joke. lol.

This is the future. Look at the fountains that can create over 100 flavors. They're immensely popular because they give people what they want. This will be popular as well.

It's not political at all. It's a business move and the advancement of technology.
People have been told for years this is coming.

Adjust, adapt or get left behind.

Learning to service the robots is where the money is to be made. Oh wait that takes a skill set that would be in demand and command a higher pay structure.

Huh funny how that works out.
