I guess with all the other bases across the globe Hawaii just isn't important anymore... or is Hawaii to expensive.

If anything, Hawaii should be expanding while our Asian assets should be closing down.

Protect the pineapples!

...Republicans and Democrats came to a less ambitious agreement to raise the debt limit through the Budget Control Act of 2011. The law found approximately $1.2 trillion in budget cuts spread over 10 years. But it also directed Congress to find another $1.2 trillion through a Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, which came to be known as "the super-committee."

The super-committee was supposed to meet and agree on a deficit reduction package by Nov. 23, 2011. Their proposal -- which could include tax increases, spending reductions or both -- would then get a filibuster-proof, up-or-down vote in Congress.

As an incentive to the super-committee, the law included an unusual kind of budget threat: If the super-committee couldn’t agree on a package, or if Congress voted it down, then automatic, across-the-board cuts would go into effect, with half of those cuts hitting defense. These automatic cuts are referred to as "sequestration."

Barack Obama says Congress owns sequestration cuts | PolitiFact

Long story short is we pay people to do a job and represent our best interests and they basically said, "We can't do our job." And nobody got fired.

Welcome to the government.

With the US shift to the east ;it will be as important has ever. Like other bases in that region also. I do not see plans to expand the base tho as others are closer to the action; so to speak. Russia see this which is why they have moved against the EU in challenging it.

Hawaii military downsizing...
Mostly incorrect. The Navy will always have a sizable force there, as will the Marines and US Air Force.

We don't need an army base on the islands.

Navy & Air Force is plenty.
