That is what happens when a business breaks the law.

Oregon: Anti-gay Christian bakery found guilty of discrimination
In my opinion, it's no different than stores I've seen that have signs saying "We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone," and restaurants that also take that approach: it's wrong, and I'm glad the bakery lost the case.

It's much different from customers who are actually doing something 'offensive,' trying to start trouble, etc.
I don't think any business owner or employee should have the right to refuse service simply because of their "beliefs."

The bakery absolutely refused to serve a person because she was gay. It sells a certain product (wedding cakes), but it refuses to sell that product to gay people.

How hard is this to understand?

It's possible, but Multnomah County had such a law in effect since 2001. It's not like it's a brand new law that came out of nowhere - if the had an established business pre-dating the law, they had at least 12 years prior notice of the law and 12 years to plan for how to operate under it.

These "new" laws were passed in 2007. Sweet cakes by melissa got it's business license in 2009.

I hope you're being sarcastic - that's just a very nasty thing to do. Not to mention it's a felony. Would you really risk a felony conviction to make that point?

Actually, Multnomah County (where the bakery is) enacted such a law in 2001. In 2008 (voted on in 2007) the law was expanded state-wide.

No, they haven't been awarded anything yet. The next hearing is in March.

I still think people should be allowed a certain leeway when deciding what demands from customers they need to follow, and where they can just decide it's something they would not want to do.

However, I do not agree with simply refusing to fulfill an order by a customer, just because you are a bigot, and don't like the person's religion, lifestyle, skin color etc...
