Individual rights are the cornerstone of a modern democracy. As individuals, we should be mindful of what is good for society, but we should never sacrifice individual rights.

Bingo! That's what built America into the best country the world has ever seen. When Individuals are responsible for themselves each one must respect the other(s) with whom they must depend to survive. Groups don't work out very well...that's what has at times led to riots and total property destruction. It has to start with the "independent" responsibility for one's self which then leads to and inspires a good society.

There are those who do not understand the concept of personal responsibility. A group can come together and accomplish a goal. However, within that group dynamic, there must be respect for the individual as well. Without the individuals, there is no group. An individual could survive without a group, but without individuals, how can there be a group?

If society is a collection if individuals than the betterment of society benefits all individuals.

A thought occurred to me. The question is about whether or not society's needs should come before the needs of the individual. Here is the question. What is the situation we are talking about?

Not always. Sometimes what benefits one group does not benefit another group. This is why I say the rights of the individual should be respected.

Yep. This is the Foundation the country was built upon. 300,000,000 million INDIVIDUALS pursuing their own best interest is what benefits the common culture most. It seems counter intuitive, but it is the process that created the most prosperous nation the world has ever seen.

It takes individuals working and pursuing their interests to create something good. A decent society also respects the rights of the individual. There have been many cases throughout history where the rights of the individuals haven't been respected.

But we aren't talking about individual groups, we're talking about society as a whole. Let's say, for an extreme example, we protected the right of the individual to use the water supply to store hazardous chemicals. How is that a more ideal situation than considering society first?
