Now obviously there's no way they'd ever allow it, but what if the salary for those in Congress was FAR less than they got, say 30-40K a year, would that improve? Wouldn't that mean those that do want to go into politics due so because they REALLY want to rather than the money?

It would be nice if their pay were based on performance and the tax payers had control over what came out of their own checks towards the same.

It's not the salary that attracts most of them but more the perks and connections.

No, and it would make them even more susceptible to bribery.

The people who go into Congress by and large are already taking large pay cuts to be in Congress. It isn't about the money.

No because their wealth doesn't come from their salary. Their wealth comes from insider trading, accepting bribes, and using campaign funds for personal use. While they don't accept the legal definition of bribes, they do take the common definition of bribes. The longer a politician stays in Washington DC, the more they learn how to work the system for personal financial gain. Members of Congress should be limited to 12 years (2terms for Senate, 6terms for House). Personally I'd like to vote them out after two terms. I just wish investigative journalist or congressional ethics investigations would be made and publicly exposed about every member of Congress and how they're personally profiting off their position.

I think Congress would improve if we had viable third or fourth parties. It's the partisanship that makes Congress ineffective.

It would turn them into a bigger bunch of crooks than they already are. Instead of spending part of the time influence peddling it would become almost a full time occupation trading cash for legislation favorable to the corporate deep pockets.

Term limit all of them. Two terms and then out, with a permanent ban on lobbying afterwards.

That's right and good point, actually if they were patriots like they claim to be , they should volunteer to do the job or work as a part-time Congressman and take Obama Care program just like the regular Americans .

Paraguayan President has refused to get paid his salary, that's patriotism !!
