The only person I churned out is my son...who's a high school teacher by the way.
I'm not producing any tv shows. Take your beef up with the people who do.
You said 'we' so i was referring to that we with 'you'. My point is that why would you defend this kind of entertainment? Change in culture happens with changes in mindsets, including yours. The producers are just giving you (us) what you(us) want. So stop wanting it.
Should white people be up in arms due to their portrayals as insane serial killers every week on "Criminal Minds" or vampires, zombies, demon-hunters... on just about everything else?
Silliness.
What's silliness in not distinguishing between the protagonists and antagonists.

There's nothing wrong with Empire.
If you find it to be so objectionable, don't watch it.
We got black people in my house and they are positively addicted to Empire. I like it too. We don't really care what some racist "black scholar" we never heard of has to say about it. Same for white racists trying to get a rise out of bringing it up.
Bringing up what someone says about a TV show is racist? By posting about this guy's comments on a TV show the OP is displaying a hatred of black people? Seriously? Is that really what constitutes your threshold for racism? Are you one of those people who thinks the word "Chicago" is racist?
Sometime you should take a moment to consider how you marginalize genuine victims of racism by calling such trivial things racist.

I've not seen it, but I will take the word of the black scholars. Somehow I don't think they are concerned about what white people or the folks at their country club think, but rather how the show's messages effect black people, specifically youth.
Come on...there are all kinds of black people on t.v..
To say that all blacks on tv are "hood centric" simply isn't true.
I'm not saying that their aren't Black roles that break away from those stereotypes. But the Black stories don't. Put together a cast of Black actors, and every other story is going to be about crime, music, or sports. That includes movies too.

I know a retired Minneapolis cop who interviewed juveniles who were brought into the station. He would always ask them what their plan was for the future and it was overwhelmingly sports star or rap star. The message is being sent loud and clear to those kids, this is the endgame for a black person in America, this is what success means.

Of course. You can only aim for what you can see, and those are the only examples they see of success.

Actually bourgeoise black folks are much more concerned about this sort of thing than non -bourgo ise black people due to them not liking to be associated with lower income black people. Bourge oise black people are overly concerned with how whites see them as they want to prove they are just as good as white people.
I have had many discussions with these black people. I am black BTW, my family, who is predominantly bourgoise black people tell me that I am "boughetto" lol, which they heard on some reality show and I have my bourgoise/picky ways but I don't give a crap what white people think of me and I don't think some hoodrat black person represents me so I have no reason to get all upset about their behavior on any given day. The only people who are a reflection of me are my kids and they know this and they respect me enough so far to not do anything ridiculous and out of character for their upbringing.
I have lost a lot of bourgoise black friends due to me telling them they have an inferiority complex to care so much about what white people think of them.

On that, it is interesting that every black person I know (including myself) has watched and enjoyed Breaking Bad, yet the bourgoisie blacks never spoke ill of that show even though it did feature a few black characters.

People watch the show for the drama. They don't care if this was a family of ditch diggers.
Black folks need to chill with all the worries about stereotypes. If this show wasn't serving the ammo racists need, the racists would invent something else to cry about relative to black people.
If white people can be multi faceted on tv, then so can black people. This show is about being greedy, conniving, backtstabbing, and treachery. Guess what? A lot of black people have those traits in spades. We're not all wonderful people.
I wish that we'd stop worrying about what non blacks will think of us and keep it moving. You can throw on all the Cosby shows you want...White people are gonna think what they wanna think...and we shouldn't be so quick to hold their opinions in such high regard.
ITA with the bold above. Couldn't rep you any further.
And FWIW, personally I am pretty judgmental about "reality" TV especially black reality TV shows as they pretend to actually show what black people are like. Empire is advertsed as a fictionalized drama, a fabrication, not real, so I have no problem with it at all.

And I'm less concerned about the non-Blacks than I am about the Black actors and viewers. Every show like this normalizes the stereotypes. Success that looks like what they see is the only success that they aim for. At least an oil tycoon opens up the conversation about how a Black person could even get involved in the oil industry.
This is the only show on a major network like this. The other shows I mentioned earlier on major networks that feature black lead characters, were created by black people, or have predominantly black shows are as follows:
Black-ish: Husband is an advertising exec and wife is a doctor, not stereotypical
Scandal: Political show, can't even really describe it, lead character is a non-stereotypical black woman
How to Get Away with Murder: Lead character is a law professor and high powered attorney, non-stereotypical black woman
will throw in Shonda Rhimes other show - Grey's Anatomy as it has a few black cast members - all of them are doctors - not stereotypical.
So Empire is the only one on the major networks that is stereotypical. But so what. Many people like to have some fantasy to escape to with their entertainment viewing. There is nothing wrong with that.
Also, fwiw, many of these same bourgoisie black people do not like Tyler Perry who does not normally portray stereotypically criminally minded black people on his programs/movies. They may be side characters but he does not glorify any sort of "hood culture." Yet these people complain just as much about him. FWIW, I don't enjoy Tyler Perry's shows or movies very much but they are positive for the most part and even though I don't like them that much, other people do and I'm glad that he is successful and providing opportunities for black actors/actresses, writers, and producers.
