Actually China for example does loans, but more importantly they give land, or other incentives at a massive rate to their solar companies.
As for making a profit.....You brought up solyndra. Fun fact-the loan program is still making a profit. A small one, but a profit.
Of course its small. They made their money back. I'm not against that. I'm not against subsidizing new technology at all. Just that if it my tax money going in, I want the govt to really take a stake just like govt of other countries do when they invest or take part in joint ventures.

LOL. I hate to say this cause its what I get called.....but the word you're looking for is socialism. IE
Socialism is a social and economic system characterized by social ownership of the means of production and co-operative management of the economy, as well as a political theory and movement that aims at the establishment of such a system.

Well I did say I was a lefty. But I wouldn't call that socialism really. Most advanced nations own stake in a lot of publicly traded companies. Norway's Statoil comes to mind. There are Crown Corporations many of the commonwealth nations own. They have state owned investment authorities called sovereign wealth funds. It's better than playing cat and mouse, going back and forth trying to tax the wealthy.
All these shiny examples of advanced nations have some high level of either state owned companies or own majority stake in enterprises. And no they're not all run like the post office but have high levels of efficiency and profitability.
We just idealistically hand money out to millionaires who promise to create new markets or "create jobs". We massively prop up this economy and see little in return. We get told there is no money for this or that program, can't retire early anymore, no right to healthcare, yada yada.
Can you not see how its tough love and free markets for us but welfare and no risk for the chosen few?

The company makes nice cars I guess. I like them but they're beyond my price range. I do like their improvements they're making on electric cars and we're pretty much seeing the future for cars.
As far as whether they deserve a huge handout or not, I wouldn't be pressed if the fed cuts off their subsidies. I do have some objections to corporate welfare.
Either way, I'm not an environmentalist and while I'm not 100% for corporate welfare, I don't actively pretend I don't. When it comes to cars, I buy them from a practical and satisfactory standpoint, not from what groups like Greenpeace think I should get.
Sorry but that list is hardly accurate. They try and include everything under sun including things that may be applicable to other business's. They are complaining about the royalties yet in the real world it's on private land that extraction is expanding and in the end increased royalties just leads to higher costs at the pump anyway.
I just checked Ford sold 250K+ units last month. waiting time was basically the time it takes to sign the paperwork...
Difference is Ford doesn't need $$$$ from the government to stay in business.
in addition to all the liberal hypocracy in this thread we now see the team-of-the-little-guy getting all bothered when a rich dude who sells special cars to rich dudes is taken to task for getting his $$$$ from the gubbermint.
I don't understand.
Correction:
"in addition to all the liberal hypocracy in this thread we now see the team-of-the-little-guy getting all bothered when a rich dude who sells special cars to rich dudes is taken to task for getting his $$$$ from the TAXPAYERS LIKE YOU AND ME. "
Nope. Not even close. It would have been much better.
