Nuclear destruction is solely up to us humans, and that danger still exists.
Science is much more advanced today than it was when you were a kid. Hence warnings today are much more serious than those of the past, unfortunately.
So when is this going to happen ? I just want to know so the wife and I can grab a great bottle of bourbon, and a couple of cigars and we can sit on the patio and embrace the end...
It is already happening. It is a continuous process, not like turning off the light.
Despite all the problems such a mass extinction can bring, I doubt humans will die out. Like cockroaches we are everywhere and in some places we will survive.
Current extinction rate is shocking, scientists say.

The scientists' analysis, published in the open-access journal Science Advances, follows up on more than a decade's worth of warnings about a rapid loss of global biodiversity. Many experts say the loss has risen to the scale seen during five previous global extinction events — the most recent of which occurred 65 million years ago when the dinosaurs died off.
Nope, can't happen because we have social conservatives in our midst who will deny everything and insist on increasing any and every polluting activity that they can think of.
What caused the other five mass extinctions? What happened after each of those?
