He was repeatedly tortured during his stay in the notorious "Hanoi Hilton" -- and refused early release when the North Vietnamese learned his father was a Navy admiral -- until he finally returned home in 1973 following the Paris Peace Accords.

Donald Trump questions John McCain's bravery - CNNPolitics.com

Personally, I have a very narrow definition of Hero, McCain happens to fit my definition of war hero, but then again, so do a lot of people who are not as famous as McCain. Maybe Donald was trying to say that McCain was only a hero because he was captured? Seem a bit inappropriate, but he has right to express his opinions.

lol

I think snipers are heroes.

He's a sure thing already for the first debate. It should be very entertaining to see someone with nothing to lose debate people who have sold their souls to politics and donors.

I don't consider any soldier a hero or worthy of respect when they are somewhere they don't belong in the first place. And spare me the "it's not their fault" excuse. Anyone in the military knows they are going to get paid for doing the dirty work of politicians and nothing whatsoever with protecting our freedoms

America is the land of winners and losers.

McCain lost.

Merv Griffin was a "winner".

The comment was in poor taste, but it's so refreshing to hear an aspiring politician just wing it.

McCain was a hero, but he needs to retire.

But there's a right wing, anti gay, religious extremist going to run against him so I guess we need to keep him on just to avoid anotyher tea party whack job.

There's an old saying about Purple Hearts - it's called the, "I forgot to duck award."

He started calling people crazies so he gets what he deserves. McCain has been selling out "republicans" values his entire political career.

We don't want your respect. We just want you to understand the level of pride we have in our nation, and perhaps share some of that pride... but let us live our lives. Most of us aren't special so don't treat us like we are. McCain is special.
