Fanning’s knowledge of the costly and complicated world of weapons development is needed in the Army, which has struggled to field new combat systems in recent decades. Since 2000, the Army has been forced to cancel virtually all of its major new weapons programs because they ran over budget or didn’t perform as expected.
If Fanning is being nominated based on his qualifications and not his sexual orientation, this is a good thing. Being gay doesn't add to or detract from one's ability to do a particular job. Don't Ask, Don't Tell was a joke.
Assuming he is the most qualified for the position, I am very happy to hear this, knowing how much it will upset all the nutty, bigoted conservatives in this country.
Personally, I don't care if the person is this/that/the other thing, believes in this/that/the other thing. As long as they are qualified/the best candidate for a job and THAT'S the reason they were hired.....perfect!
So why does everything have to be labeled as the 1st(insert color, religious belief, sexual orientation, nationality, etc.) have to be so high up on the list of things to mention? In my view, I suppose it's often about politicians wanting to selfishly gain political points(votes).
It would certainly be refreshing to here/read "qualified individual hired to do XYZ job", talk about their qualifications/experience and end it there. The rest is a non-issue to me and I bet to many others.

It's always good in a serious thread for someone to inject a good dose of humor.
The question of course becomes was he appointed because he is gay. Unfortunately due to the track record of this admin it is hard to believe otherwise. His credentials certainly seem valid to me tho.
He doesn't have a lick of military service, but he’s been a terrific paper pusher. Obama's kinda guy.
