A new study by the National Bureau of Economic Research has suggested that programs like food stamps and housing vouchers reduce poverty by almost twice as much as first thought.

"According to standard census numbers, the poverty rate in New York from 2008 to 2011 was 13.6 percent, before taking these programs into account. The programs the study examines — food stamps (a.k.a. SNAP), welfare (a.k.a. TANF), state-level general assistance programs, and housing aid — dropped that down to 10.8 percent. But the study suggests the real number was even lower: a mere 8.3 percent."

The estimated poverty-fighting power of these programs has been dramatically understated for years. Turns out anti-poverty programs not only work, but work better than we thought.

They work so good that the programs took on more and more people over the last 7 years.

Wow, that's awesome. I can't wait for the charts that show this large decrease in poverty. Those will come in handy I'm sure.

Many illegals make over $1000 a week in NJ.. and then they get free food, housing, medical and they live good.. $50k trucks are the norm with illegals.

Yup, it gets them out of poverty and puts Americans into poverty as they struggle to keep up with food prices.. the free food to food stamp recipients keeps the price of food high because the food stamp crowd will pay $5 for a gallon of milk. They get it free..no matter how high the price goes along with meat, eggs and all food stuffs they will buy it.

What constitutes poverty? Only owning one car? A limited data cell phone plan?

LOL, wow OP, then why are we seeing an increase in poverty rolls instead of a decrease? Talk about a blatant attempt to try to justify taking money from other people.

Actually, the numbers have been dropping for the two last years but I know conservatives don't like inconvenient numbers that undercut their narrative.

I know the trucks, nice new crew cabs. We could afford one too if the government paid to raise our kids from conception to an adult and beyond in some cases.

Yes, there are so many messed up facets of how an illegal takes advantage of the system. The ever growing burden of raising families is driving us further into poverty. Anyone that is getting something "free" from the government is decreasing the income of the taxpayer.

They have fake documents, stolen IDs and lots of little cash bundles, pre-creating for cash.

Getting out of poverty? No, being driven to third world status. I guess ending poverty is the redistribution so that no one has much of anything. No wonder so many lose the incentive to work. I did the math once and if you took everything into consideration, you came out ahead not working and just collecting welfare.

What happened to "pride"?

http://cis.org/north/food-stamp-prog...illegal-aliens We all know how thorough the government is so not being eligible doesn't mean squat!
