Looks like Obama will close the Guantanamo Bay Detention Facility. They're talking about sending the prisoners back to the Middle East. That sounds like a bad idea when you consider how many of the previously released detainees returned to terrorism.
Gitmo itself, along with all the other so-called black sites, is a bad idea, and is immoral and illegal under both domestic and international law. Those responsible (e.g. Cheney and his company in the military) and those who shielded those responsible from facing justice (e.g. Obama and most of the Congress) should be prosecuted to the limit of the law, and under the War Crimes Act of 1996 that includes the death penalty for some of them.

Utter nonsense. The place was created by executive caprice and it can be ended by the same means; besides, Obama's used his pen and his phone in contexts more dubious than closing this prison unilaterally would be.
Good. We've held some of these prisoners for more than a decade without any kind of formal charges. It's well past time for it to be closed.
The reason Gitmo was built in the first place was that if the prisoners had been incarcerated in the U.S. they would have had the right of due process and a speedy trial. President Cheney... Ah... Bush wanted a prison where he could operate outside the law. It should have been closed in 2009.

That is not true at all, how do they transfer the remaining prisoners to the states, where is the funding coming from or do they just close it down and leave the remaining prisoners at the gate.
You mean asking the Secretary of Defense to take responsibility for each release even though they haven't been charged, pulling funding for transfer to the states, of course congress is obstructing him and pandering to their base.
The plan is to send them home, not to the states.. Did you miss the talking point?

Bull. Gitmo, by nature of the budget, has to be paid for yearly, so if Obama wanted it closed, he could just veto the budget to keep it open.

The same way they pay the guards to stay there. You dont need special funding to send them home, you thrown them on an army plane, fly them over Afghanistan, and toss them out the door..
its cheaper to send them home then pay the guards..
"Can't prosecute but too dangerous to release!" Huh?????
OK, so Obama sends up a plan recently to transfer the Guantanamo detainees to other nations or other facilities. Basically, the Republicans aren't interested and rumour has it that the proposal is DOA.
OK...fine (not really, but remember...these are Republicans we're dealing with)
But that's not what troubles me.
It's this information in the link that gives me an apoplectic fit: 2 dozen detainees can't really be prosecuted, but they're too dangerous to release!
What in the hell does THAT mean? Is this still the United States of America? We're now comfortable holding people in custody when we know damn well that we have no prosecutable evidence against them? This doesn't disturb most thinking Americans that we're openly admitting that we're no different than the despotic regimes that we assume we're so much better than?
I mean, there are so many totally insane Jihadists over in the Middle East, a few more is not going to really make a difference!
Just air-drop the remaining Gitmo Jihadists back into the sand-pit.
