Should the United States have a more (1) internal or (2) external focus in the future?

1. Americanism

"...love of America; loyalty to her institutions as the best yet devised by man to secure life, liberty, individual dignity, and happiness; and the willingness to defend our country and Flag against all enemies, foreign and domestic" (The American Legion 2006, p. 1).

2. Internationalism

"...the theory and practice of transnational or global cooperation. As a political ideal, it is based on the belief that nationalism should be transcended because the ties that bind people of different nations are stronger than those that separate them" (Arora 2011, p. 2).

Which ideology sounds more convincing to you? Discuss.

Internationalism. National Chauvinismus and Nationalism brought about WW2. Getting rid of the nation state is the solution for moving towards a peaceful 21st century.

Less than a quarter of the world's population lives under and values freedom, individual rights, contract law and property rights.

Until that changes, internationalism per se has no place in American policy.

We should ally ourselves with countries that share our values -- Britain, Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Israel primarily.

And we should work to expand that alliance to include the Russian Federation, Japan, Thailand, India....

But forget Muslim countries as well as despotisms in general (North Korea, Cuba, China, etc.)

As long as they wield any influence in the UN, we should reject internationalism in the sense of having the whole world decide things that we have to comply with.

Kick the anti-American UN -- which we financially support -- out of New York until it cleans up its act.

It's a Communist and/or Islamist nest of spies and America haters.

Screw them!

Internationalism will lead to massive redistribution of our wealth to 3rd world countries that make our poor look like Kardashians.

Id say we need a balance between the two.

I lean somewhat towards isolationism though. "International law" is an oxymoron in my view.

China is the largest buyer of Boeing aircraft. US jobs depend on it. China insusts interiors be finished in China.

US automakers shipped 2.1 Made in the US cars overseas for sale.

60% of GE's profit is attributed to offshore sales.

Tupperware would have folded a long time ago if they relied on domestic growth. Instead they expanded to Asia where Tupperware Parties work. Tupperware manufactures where they sell product and in doing so creates jobs for local communities which creates discretionary income to allow people to buy stuff like Tupperware.

A connected global world has global issues and requires some sort of global governing body. We have moved past the stage of isolationism, save for a catastrophic global event.

Hasn't our version of capitalism been doing that for 30 years?
