When it's all said and done Canadians will need more privatized medical services.
I read on another forum where a Canadian said that people in Canada will really be in bad shape if the U.S adopted a full gov't run system because America will have long waiting lists and many Canadians will then have no where to go when their waiting lists get too long since some Canadians visit U.S hospitals when their waiting lists cause access problems.
JUST REMEMBER IT"S FREE!!!!!!!! YUP the government just gives it to you. NO cost, no money ITS FREE. OPPS I forgot one thing ignore the TAXES in your paycheck I know they are really high and you get crappy service but remember it's FREEEEEEE!!
Your View - Montreal: Task force urges more private health care in Quebec (http://www.cbc.ca/news/yourview/montreal/2008/02/task_force_urges_more_private.html - broken link)
I do not think the USA would adopt Canada's health care all at once; or The one in France which is said to be the best in the world. Change would have to be incremental- but change and reform are needed. Firstly to bring costs down to be affordable (based on household income) so accessibility could be had by all.
Probably a hybrid system between government and business, might work-however having the private sector run health care seems rather strange to me. The current plan is horrible- costs are soaring. There is a moral and ethical question not to have any American unable to see a Doctor or receive health care. The huge profits of the insurance companies are going to have to be drastically reduced or eliminated. If so the private sectors input may eventually be almost eliminated. The government needs to regulate these greedy corporations. It makes it very difficult for the USA attempting to be the worlds 'moral compass' and set an example to other nations when many of its citizens are unable to see a Doctor.
Over time, however single payer-like that which exists in Canada, and Western Europe and the rest of the industrialized world will happen.

I think there will be a move towards more market or private sector solutions for healthcare because both the U.S and many European countries have large ageing populations going into retirement. This will affect the tax revenue needed to fund a single-payer system.

With a larger segment of the population older and retired, I would see the exact opposite happening. These citizens are going to demand some type of health care guaranteed by the government. Many will not be able to afford their own coverage for various reasons. Compounding this is that traditionally the elderly tend to vote more often and reliably than the middle aged and younger generations.
