Transgender troops on active duty may qualify for sex-reassignment surgery if their physicians deem it necessary, according to Pentagon officials.
After news broke last week that incarcerated Army Pvt. Chelsea Manning was granted authorization to undergo gender reassignment surgery, a Defense Department spokesman said Monday that the option is available to all transgender active-duty troops if their doctors recommend it and senior military health officials approve it.
As much as I hate to admit it, this is one of the times I just cannot defend the Pentagon or the military.
I think money should be better used.
This person is in leavenworth for leaking documents to wikileaks while in MI, is discharged for the army and they are having the government pay for it. .
It's pretty sad that those who want to have kids and to have IVF have to pay thousands out of pocket for it, a friend who had a child with literally no brain and it died after birth could not have an abortion unless they paid for it out of their pocket.
There is so much "pot, meet kettle" anymore.

Things have probably changed since DH retired from the Army in 08. I know that IVF used to be available for people struggling with fertility or if an abortion was medically necessary either because of the mother or fetus it could be taken care of in an AMC (since I only know the Army).
I think that inmate Manning should only receive life saving surgeries; DH used to work at the old DB for 7 years and he is livid at this decision. I am fine with transgendered people joining AFTER their surgeries if they plan on sexual reassignment surgery; hormones are something that would be fairly easy to obtain through MTFs or on the economy with Tricare.
I wish we had a President and representatives who pushed for benefits and rights of the average, middle-class, straight American as much as they push for the rights and benefits of the disenfranchised and non-Americans.
Somehow the majority has become the forgotten stepchild.
