Another article pushing the College Agenda. What happened to learning a trade or getting a certificate in something that is really needed in our country? Those jobs exist, but they keep talking about the college education everyone needs to make it out here to buy a house. Although, I am a Dissertation away from another degree, I truly do not believe that everyone needs a college degree to comfortable live here in America or own a home: For Millennials, Homeownerhip Isn't Affordable Without College Degree - Fortune
That's a bunch of malarky. I have family members and several friends with no college degree and they own their homes.
You don't need a college degree to have a financially comfortable life in the USA today.

There is a shortage of electrical linemen in America. In the next few years there will be approx 100,000 job openings around the country due to retirement of the baby boom generation. Salaries range from $50,000 to well over $100,000 per year with overtime and holiday pay ect.
LOL this sort of reminds me of something my stepson said - in all seriousness - the other day at graduation. Now, keep in mind that he's 23 years old and has yet to actually have a job, other than lawn mowing jobs that his mom lined up for him when he was a teenager.
My husband said, "This is great - now you can get a job!" He was actually serious - it's time for adulthood to set in, past time really. My stepson said, "It's not as easy as it was when you were my age, Dad. I'm competing GLOBALLY for jobs."
My husband laughed when he told me this and said, "Well, in order to be competing for jobs, I think he needs to actually be APPLYING for jobs - which I see no evidence of."
Sort of like complaining that you don't ever win the lottery - when you never buy lottery tickets.
Maybe if Millennials would be willing to live in a starter home like the first home their parents bought - probably 1300 square feet or so, one bathroom, one car garage - that sort of thing - they could afford to buy a house, with or without a college degree.
LOL, my youngest son just moved out of the house. The house he is renting is one step above a "tiny house". It's really nice, been very well remodeled. It's like a small apartment with 4 walls and a yard. Built in 1900. I told him I bet families have been raised in this house. I'm guessing 700 sq ft.

Just one example.
The Government has been giving out millions of dollars to get people trained for this job and many others that do not require a degree. Are some of them risky?? Indeed they are!
Current college graduation rate (6-year) is 59% with ~21M openings.
Apprenticeship completion rate is 27% with ~448,000 openings.
Part of the reason you see less people doing trades is there are simple less opportunities to apprentice in the first place, and completing is more difficult and risky than completing college.
Not to mention the path from journeyman to master, which is where you make the real money. Far easier to get from bachelor's degree to master's degree than from trade journeyman to trade master.
The obvious response to this is to do a trade school, but then you are essentially swapping the cost and time of college for nearly equal cost and time of trade school. You still earn no money while you are in school and spend close to equal amounts on tuition. Trade schools offer far fewer scholarships, and are less likely to accept transfer credits from community colleges (who, in turn, have cut classes that could transfer to trade schools). Note: For-profit trade schools have been caught fudging their placement rates by including near-minimum wage jobs in tangentially related careers, e.g. placing someone as a busbuy after completing culinary school.
The government just provided a boatload of money to states for apprenticeships. Check out the Department of Labor website: https://www.doleta.gov/oa/aag.cfm

I would rather risk getting zapped by 7500 volts than working a crappy retail job or worse. The twenty something's apprentices we have at our company are already driving brand new pick ups. Their peers that are still in college stacking up loan debt will never catch up to them considering what they have to pay back.

There is a shortage of welders, technicians, fabricators...etc. Entry level welders are earning more than entry level basket weavers with a degree in Liberal Arts, guaranteed!
Articles like this only prove that media is bought and paid as the 4th arm of government.
